Clint Rogers chose Manang for his Ph.D. dissertation field research because of the community’s fascinating history of business activity in Southeast Asia and Kathmandu and the vibrant nature of recent entrepreneurial activity in Manang. While conducting research, the author spent twelve months in Manang and eight months in Kathmandu in between 2002 and 2003.
Written for a broad audience and illustrated with beautiful photographs, the book provides a fascinating view of the history, culture, economy and landscape of perhaps the most enigmatic and the most stunning valley in the high mountains of the Himalaya. A must-read for visitors and for those with an interest in the developing Himalaya region, offering useful insights into the phenomena of entrepreneurship, cooperation and competition within village communities.
